Membership at Missio Dei
What is The Watershed Class all about?
The Watershed Class has been designed to offer an overview of the basic beliefs of Missio Dei Church and the ways in which they will be fleshed out in an effort to help explain what it means to be a missional church here in Portland Maine. The fundamental vision for Missio Dei is to be a church that engages the culture of Portland with the counter-cultural nature of Christ's Kingdom. This activity demands that we as a community be familiar with what it means to “be church” as opposed to “do church”.
The purpose of the class in not to offer an exhaustive list of what we believe, but rather it offers a look inside the essential theology and philosophy that shapes us for the mission of Jesus.
Who should take The Watershed Class?
Joining a church is a very significant step in a person’s life and is not to be taken lightly. Membership for a lot of people means signing a paper and thus receiving all of the rights and privileges of your new status. Not so at Missio Dei. The membership process here at Missio Dei is understood in light of who we are as “the body of Christ” and is a significant commitment to both (1) the covenant community and (2) the personal participation in the mission of Jesus to embody and proclaim the gospel authentically. So, membership is less like a finish line and more like a starting gate. It means that we are all making a significant commitment to each other and our corporate responsibility to engage our communities in a way that makes sense for today.
Thus, membership is for anyone who takes the spiritual journey seriously and desires to explore membership at Missio Dei Church.
