Our Story

Missio Dei Church began as a dream in my heart about 10 years ago while studying at Dallas Theological seminary. The dream was birthed out of a persistent sense of holy discontent for religious establishment and the business of “church”. While I love the rich history of the Christian faith, I am also not foolish enough to believe that the church is without her problems.

After graduating from Dallas Theological Seminary in 2000, I was called to pastor the Orange Alliance Church in Barre, Vermont. The OAC was and still is to this day a sweet church who loved Jesus.

Yet, after several years of pastoring there, the vision that God had planted in my soul began to overwhelm me. It was then that I shared the vision of Missio Dei Church with a trusted friend Joey Fassett, who was a part of my ministry at the OAC, over ice cream and beer late one night at the local Applebee’s.

After that meeting God moved in our hearts and called us to move to Portland Maine to initiate the church. We made the move, both the Fassett’s and ourselves, in August of 2004. We moved to Portland without knowing anyone here, having any solid financial support, or health insurance. We just went…armed with faith and a calling that would not leave us alone.

Since then, we have been sharing our story and seeing God gather men, women, and children to the vision of a church that remains solidly committed to Christ and His calling on us to love the culture and people of Portland. Period.

In the fall of 2005 we finally got some traction and developed a regular and committed core group of people. In October 2005 we help our commissioning and this past year Missio Dei Church ordained Joey Fassett and me (Angel Silva) as ministers of the Gospel.

In the past 2 years we have held our membership class called Watershed twice, and have called over 50 members and their families.

To this day or ultimate priority is Jesus. No games, no religious posturing, just authentic and broken people who love the world around them and are seeking to show Portland the life and love of Jesus. No questions asked…

But, this is not the end of the story. It continues…

Each Sunday new faces enter the story and each month it seems more people find their story intersecting with ours. I tell everyone the same thing Jesus told his early “seekers” … Come and See… No commitments, no obligations. Just come and see.
